Safe Weight Reduction Question and Answers

By Steve Polk Question-- Is it good to engage in a routine of running daily in my safe weight reduction program? Answer--No. While running in and of itself is good, and does contain many benefits. However, the stress and strain put on your joints by a routine of running daily running may cause problems down the road. Runners often suffer from foot pain, bone spurs, muscle cramps, and heel pain. All these things can stop you from exercising. Our goal is safe weight reduction. In any safe weight reduction plan, variety is the name of the game. While running is fine, I choose a brisk walk over a jog, due to less stress and strain on the joints. With that in mind, here is a routine that has some variety to keep your interest. Remember to vary any routine about every 6 weeks. Monday: Brisk 20 minute walk. (If you are just starting out start with 5 minutes, and build from there). Tuesday: Some kind of strength training. Start light and vary the routine every few weeks. Wednesday: Tai Chi. If you are not familiar with this type of exercise, do a google search. This is a highly recommended activity. Sometime before or after Tai Chi, have a brisk walk. Thursday: Strength training Friday: Yoga. Hatha is the recommended form. Brisk walk. Saturday: Try a mat based pilates class. Sunday: Take it easy and relax. The above routine has enough variety to keep just about anyone interested. Remember to check with your doctor before beginning any weight loss program.
